MON, JULY 13 2020-theG&BJournal– The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported on Sunday a further 16 people have died from coronavirus in 24 hours to bring the country’s total to 740. The latest figure is the highest Sunday figure since the ease of shut-down.
Five more new cases was also reported in Cross River bringing the total confirm cases in the State to 9.
A total of 571 new cases was confirmed nationwide to take the country’s total of coronavirus to 32, 558 with a total of 13, 447 recoveries reported nationwide.
Remarkable, Ebonyi State broke its one day record for confirmed cases with 108 new cases reported on Sunday. The new cases takes the State’s total to 616, near the top ten most infected States behind Katsina at 669 and Ondo at 716. Lagos added another 152 new cases. Edo, Ondo, and the FCT all reported 53, 46 and 38 new cases to take their respective total to 1731, 716 and 2576.
The other States reporting new cases are Oyo 20, Kwara 19, Plateau 17, Osun 14, Ekiti 14, Bayelsa 14, Akwa Ibom 11, Kaduna 11, Rivers 11, Niger 10, Ogun 7, Kano 6 and Bauchi 2.
The NCDC have expressed concern on the rising cases and called for more voices to help send the right messages across to Nigerians.
According to the NCDC DG, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu ‘’the bad news is the COVID-19 cases are still rising, the good news is that a reduction depends on collective efforts and adherence to recommended measures.’’
Meanwhile, 54 African Union Member States are reporting total confirmed COVID-19 cases of 578,734 with 12,996 deaths and 287,563 recoveries.
Cases worldwide in the past 24 hours rose by over 230,000 according to the WHO data and about 13 million people have now been infected globally according to the John Hopkins University tracker.
