THUR, JULY 02 2020-theG&BJournal- The Minister for Aviation, Hadi Sirika has announced that domestic flights would resume on July 8, 2020.
Sirika said in a tweet late Wednesday that operations would resume at the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikwe Airport in Abuja on July 8 with other airports to follow.
‘’Kano, Port Harcourt, Owerri and Maiduguri to resume on the 11th,’’ he said on his tweet. ‘’other domestic airports will open for operation on the 15th. Date for international to be announced in due course. Bear with us please,’’ he pleaded.
The aviation authority had earlier conducted a dry run simulation exercises at the domestic terminal of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and the domestic terminals of the Muritala Muhammaed Airport, Lagos respectively.
The green light for domestic flight resumption came on a day Nigeria hauled in 790 coronavirus confirmed cases, its biggest one-day haul. The new cases takes the country total to 26,484. Active cases have crept up to 15,729 while recoveries now total 10,152. Total number of deaths recorded has silently crept past 600-totaling 603 but it is suggested that the number could be well above that.
Delta State with 166 confirmed cases surpassed Lagos-120 and underscores the surge in the state. The governor of the State, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, his wife and daughter has all tested positive for coronavirus.
The other states with huge cache of one day coronavirus infection are Enugu-66, FCT-65, Edo-60, Ogun-43, Kano-41, Kaduna-39, Ondo-33, Rivers-32, Bayelsa-29, Katsina-21 and Imo-20.
The others in the low double digit and single digit count are Kwara-18, Oyo-11, Abia-10, Benue-6, Gombe-4, Yobe-2, Bauchi-2 and Kebbi-2. 138,462 people have been tested so far, hugely far off target of 2 million set almost 2 months ago.
