TUE, JULY 21 2020-theG&BJournal-COVID-19 fatalities in Nigeria surged to 801 after 12 more people were confirmed dead Monday by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), as confirmed cases rose to another sobering milestone since the pandemic hit the country in February 2020.
562 new cases were reported from 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to take country’s total of confirmed cases to 37,225, reflecting the resilience of the virus in any climatic condition.
Confirmed cases in the top nine most infected States are surpassing figures recorded in most Africa countries. Confirmed cases rose 102 in FCT to bring its total 3,129, and above the total in many Central African countries. The total count in Lagos is now 13,538 after it reported another 100 new cases, making it still the seventh most infected State (if it were a country) in Africa.
Oyo State now has a total of 2,193, Edo -2,000, Rivers-1,535, Delta-1,428, Kano-1,416, Kaduna-1,191 and Ogun 1,174 are States that have recorded cases above 1000.
Cases in Cross River has risen to 13 since it began recording it’s cases on the NCDC table. The least infected State so far is Kogi with just 5 confirmed cases.
Meanwhile, a study conducted Oxford University scientists showed its experimental COVID-19 vaccine is safe and provokes an immune reaction that lasts for up to two months after 91% of volunteers injected produced immune response against the virus that lasted for more than a month.
Scientists who conducted the study are optimistic that the vaccine could be ready by the end of the year if tests go according to plan.
The vaccine called AZ1222 is already in production by pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and report say the UK government has already snatched 100 million doses off the shelves.
