COVID-19: Nigeria confirmed cases now 30,249 and WHO admits disease is airborne

THUR, JULY 09 2020-theG&BJournal– The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Nigeria rose 460 to 30,249, according to data from Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) with reported death toll up at 684.
Other grim figures showed the escalation of the virus in several States across. The NCDC figures showed cases in Lagos rose another 150 to 11,670 with 133 deaths while the Federal Capital Territory has seen virus infection of up to 2,348 with 35 deaths. 16 States now have reported at least one case of fatality, while 18 States have confirmed cases above 400. The 460 new cases are reported from 21 States.
The NCDC data showed that a total of 169,629 tests in total have been carried out. While 12,370 patients have been discharged, 17,195 remain as active cases.
Meanwhile, The World Health Organisation (WHO) Wednesday admitted there is evidence that the virus can be spread through the air. WHO warned that airborne transmission in crowded, closed and poorly ventilated places cannot be ruled out. WHO previously claimed that the infection can pass through droplets mainly, if it is expelled from the mouth or nose of infected person.
More than 500,000 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Africa with numbers doubling in 22 countries over the past month and more than 11,000 deaths reported. Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa accounts for 43% of the continents total cases, according to WHO Africa region. WHO said there are also some signs of progress as 10 countries have experienced a downward trend over the past one month.
Global total of confirmed cases have now exceeded 12 million.
