WED, MAY 13 2020-theG&BJournal-Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello Wednesday announced an extension to the state’s lockdown by another two weeks, as well as a total ban on the operation of commercial motorcycle (Okada) for the same period, as part of new measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state.
The Governor referred to the closure of interstate borders which he says has not been effective as well as the flouting of passenger transportation rules by commercial motorcyclists and other drivers in reaching the decisions.
He revealed the steps while addressing the media after the state executive council meeting in Minna Niger State capital.
The Governor also revealed that the state government has strengthened its surveillance system to detect any case of coronavirus disease as well as investigate and monitor any outbreak. He said that 457 health workers have been trained and 20 adhoc staff that will oversee functions in the planned molecular laboratory and testing centre at the General Hospital, Minna.
The molecular laboratory will help increase the state’s testing capacity and reduce turnaround time for the release of COVID-19 results.
Meanwhile, the State COVID-19 Task Force Vice Chairman said latest figures from samples tested today showed that 10 were returned as positive, 125 were confirmed negative, 67 results are still been awaited, a total of 95 people are in quarantine facilities across the state while 156 people who have completed their two weeks mandatory quarantine have been allowed to go home.
