COVID-19- global update: One million people worldwide catch the bug, in Africa the number is 6,470 confirmed cases of coronavirus

FRI, APRIL 03 2020-theG&BJournal- Latest surveillance update in Africa by the Africa Centre for Disease Control (AfricaCDC) says a total of 6,470 confirmed cases in the continent with 49 countries reporting cases as at 5pm EAT. 241 people have died and 504 people have recovered according Africa CDC.
By regions, North Africa leads in the number of confirmed cases with 2,740 cases. 162 people have died in the region but 290 have so far recovered.
Southern Africa has fewer deaths at 10 than North Africa and also fewer confirmed cases at 1,471 but it is the second most impacted in the continent. West Africa has a total of 1,207 confirmed cases, 35 deaths and 147 cases discharged.
East Africa so far has reported a total of 586 confirmed cases with 13 deaths and 14 people discharged, while Central Africa has managed to evade the crisis to a large extent, reporting just 466 confirmed cases, 7 deaths and 10 discharged.
Most of the countries in the continent have implemented both economic and social measures including nationwide lockdowns in Kenya, Uganda, the Republic of the Congo and elsewhere as well as partial lockdown in Nigeria.
Globally, while the world was celebrating the Autism Day Thursday, the total number of the COVID-19 confirmed cases crept up to 1 million. More than 53,000 people now killed by the greatest foes the world has ever faced in the 21 century.
The pandemic is thriving more in the United States now where a mix of issues including very bad judgment, politics and arrogance allowed the disease to fester and race quickly to 236, 399 reported cases of the virus- just under a quarter of global total, with over 1, 000 deaths.
In Europe, Italy and Spain continues to battle the crisis and both countries have over 115,000 confirmed cases. Death toll in Spain is about 10,000 while in Italy 13,000 have died from the disease. Germany is next on the card to beat the record set by Wuhan in Hubei, China where the disease spread from. Its total tally as at Thursday was 80,641 cases-and rising.
