TUE FEB 17 2026-theGBJournal| Chinese e-commerce giant Temu is under investigation in Nigeria over alleged breaches of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023, raising fresh concerns about user privacy and cross-border data handling.
Regulators are reportedly probing the company’s data collection practices, consent framework, and compliance with local storage and processing requirements as scrutiny intensifies on how global digital platforms manage Nigerians’ personal information.
The investigation ordered by the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) Commissioner/CEO, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, was triggered by concerns around online surveillance through personal data processing, accountability, data minimization requirements, transparency, duty of care, and cross-border transfer.
The NDPC said preliminary investigations indicate that Temu is an e-commerce platform which process personal information of approximately 12.7 million data subjects in Nigeria, with 70 million daily active users globally.
The National Commissioner warns that processors who engage in processing activities on behalf of data controllers without verifying their compliance with NDP Act may be liable under the NDP Act.
