MON, JULY 13 2020-theG&BJournal– The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika today provided explanation to the delay by Nigeria to reopen its airspace for international flight resumption.
He cited the example of several countries around the global including Nigeria that have placed ban on international flight into their airports as one major reason.
Many of those countries are still tinkering with when to fully allow flights from other destinations for fear of escalating the coronavirus in their communities and many others have implemented quarantine measures on arrival.
‘’Everybody wants to play safe. These and many other reasons will make us to be cautious and allow us to liaise with stakeholders and then decide when we should open the international flights.’’
He assured of the eagerness of the country to open its skies as quickly as possible for international flights because of the revenue the sector is losing daily, but emphasised the need to ensure that everybody is safe before the decision is taken.
According to Sirika, whatever decision that will be taken, will be taken in the interest of humanity. ‘’This is the underlying principle as we continue to observe developments internationally.’’
He said the country will also liaise with the ECOWAS community to distil what is good for it as a country before reopening in other to reduce the risk of contamination.
