MON, JAN 27 2020-theG&BJournal-At the Grammy Awards last night, Lizzo opened the show with her performance of Truth Hurts and Cuz I love you and dedicated it to the legendry Kobe Bryant.
Alicia Keys told the audience she was feeling ‘’crazy sad’’ about Bryant. Boyz 11 Men joined her on stage at the Staples Centre to sing It’s so hard to say Goodbye to Yesterday. The audience was moved to tears and sat sombre and in clear deep reflection throughout the entire night.
‘’We are standing here, heartbroken, in the house the Kobe Bryant built,’’ 39 year old Alicia said in an emotional monologue.
There was also a spotlight on the Kobe’s No.8 and 24 jerseys in the rafters of the arena the entire night.
Kobe played most of his NBA career at the arena where the Grammys were held.
Among the football stars, tribute poured from around the globe. Brazilian forward 27 year old Neymar paid his respects by celebrating a goal in Kobe’s honour. The news of Kobe’s death broke shortly before PSG’s 2-0 Ligue 1 victory over Lille but Neymar was said to have heard the news during the half-time interval.
Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling tweeted after he heard of the Kobe’s tragic death; ‘’Rest Easy,’’ along with the picture of the 41 year old Kobe. Marcus Rashford also joined in the tribute with a tweet; ‘’A true inspiration in the sporting industry. RIP Legend.’’
Formula 1 icon and reigning World Champion, Lewis Hamilton said, ‘’I’m sad to hear that we lost one of our greats. Kobe Bryant was one of the greatest athletes and was such an inspiration to so many including myself. I’m deeply saddened for his family and for the people around the world who looked up to him. May he and his daughter rest in peace.’’
American Football icon Tom Brady tweeted ‘’We miss you already Kobe.’’
Basketball star LeBron James wept on the tarmac at Los Angeles International airport yesterday after the LA Lakers learned on a flight home that his former team mate had died in a helicopter crash.
In Nigeria, millions of NBA fans shared their grief too. D’Tigers Nigeria Basketball Federation led the tribute with a sombre tweet that said ‘’RIP Kobe Bryany. You will be missed’’
Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash that also killed his 13 year old daughter Gianna and seven others when their helicopter came down in thick fog near Los Angeles on Sunday morning, sparking an outpouring of emotional tributes.
