MON, 29 AUG, 2022-theGBJournal| Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) today announces the extension of their protracted strike, having failed to reach a meaningful agreement with the Federal Government on issues on the table.

ASUU officials said the extension follows a ‘’heated and stormy National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Union in Abuja today.’’

ASUU had on August 1, 2022, resolved to rolled over the lingering strike for 4 weeks following what it called extensive deliberations and taking cognizance of Government’s past failures to abide by its own timelines in addressing issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU MOA, NEC meeting.

One of the keys in contention is the Government’s award of a recommended consolidated University Academic salary structure, prepared by the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission (NSIWC) which was firmly rejected by ASUU.

ASUU accuses the Federal Government of repudiating the 1981 FGN-ASUU agreement, under the Alhaji Shehu Shagari’s administration, which established the principle of collective bargaining, based on the Wages Boards and Industrial Council’s Decree No.1 of 1973, Trade Dispute Act (1976), ILO Conventions 49 (1948), 91 (1950), 154 (1988) and recommendation 153 (1981), Udoji Commission Report of 1974, and Cokey Commission Report of 1981.

‘’Government’s surreptious move to set aside the principle of collective bargaining which is globally in practice, has the potential of damaging lectures’ psych and destroying commitment to university system,’’ ASUU argued.
