WED, 08 JUNE, 2022-theGBJournal| 23 aspirants on a day of an intense National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), some drop-outs and after almost 24 hours of the exercise, former Governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu defeated even the incumbent Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, to emerge the party’s flag bearer at the 2023 Presidential Primaries at the Eagles Square, Abuja, Nigeria.

A total of 2,322 delegates gathered to vote, and Tinubu’s vote of 1, 271 votes swamped the combined score of 831 garnered by the other 14 aspirants by 440.

Tinubu was pointed towards victory with the withdrawal of contenders, including Governor Kayode Feyemi, Ajayi Borrofice, former Akwa Ibom Governor, Godswill Akpabio, Ibikunle Amosun and Dimeji Bankole, former Speaker of House Representative, who requested their delegates to turn in their votes to the veteran politician.

‘’The other candidates are all good men. But I sincerely believe I am the person this moment calls for,’’ Tinubu told the delegates before the voting exercise began in the early hours of today. ‘’I have the experience. I led the transformation of Lagos from a dangerous, unwelcoming place in 1999 to a clean, safe, and vibrant place and the 5th largest economy in all of Africa,’’ he added.

Tinubu describes himself as a unifying leader who have constructed a formidable political structure, one that has delivered ‘’electoral victory after electoral victory.’’

Tinubu now faces a formidable task in delivering on the party’s objective which is to triumph in next year’s general election at all levels in the national elections ‘’and have the personal gravity and national recognition to pull the party to victory in state and local elections.’’

He also faces the huge task of contending with resurgent Nigeria Labour Party Candidate Peter Obi and the Abubakar Atiku, former Vice President and flag bearer for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections.
