MON SEPT 14, 2020-theGBJournal-Arik airline has become the latest major airline casualty of unions’ strike in the country as its operation is shutdown today following salaries dispute and job cuts.
Two Aviation Unions, National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), are leading the dissent against the airline which has been reeling from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and they have resolved to continue the shutdown until all their demands are met by the management of Arik.
Both Unions are angry over unpaid staff salaries and retrenchments, which has seen the airlines’ workforce cut by about 95% since it grounded its fleet amid global lockdown. They are seeking also, remittance of all deductions made on staff salaries including Pension and tax deductions, payment of salary arrears of seven months and immediate review of all employee remunerations.
The News Agency of Nigeria quoted ATSSSAN Chairman, Innocent Atasie as saying that workers resolved to shut down Arik operations nationwide when all efforts made to resolve the problems failed.
