SUN 26 DEC, 2021-theGBJournal- Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Nobel Peace prize laureate who helped end apartheid in South Africa has died aged 90. Bishop Tutu’s death comes few weeks after that of South Africa’s last apartheid era president, FW de Clark, who died aged 85.

Bishop Tutu, the tireless advocate in the nonviolent struggle against apartheid in South Africa, won the Nobel prize in 1984.  And then, when apartheid did end, was appointed to oversee the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa said his death marked another chapter of bereavement ‘’in our nation’s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans.’’

He referred to the ‘’churchman’’ as an ‘’iconic spiritual leader, anti-apartheid activist and global human rights campaigner and, a leader of principle and pragmatism who gave meaning to the biblical insight that faith without works is dead.’’

Archbishop Tutu is also noted for his amazing sense of humour, and his willingness to speak out and organise in the face of injustice.

Hakainde Hichilema, President, Republic of Zambia on hearing of the Bishop’s demise  said, ‘’we are saddened by the news of the death of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu who passed away in Cape Town this morning, at the age of 90,’’

Hichilema said Archbishop Emeritus Tutu belongs to a  generation of selfless African leaders that gallantly challenged the injustices of apartheid and racial subjugation against the African people in South Africa and other marginalised people around the world.

‘’We wish to express our profound condolences to his widow Nomalizo Leah Tutu, his family and the people of South Africa on the passing away of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. May His Soul Rest In Peace.’’
