NASARAWA, JUNE 30, 2016 – Gov. Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has approved the establishment of clinical laboratory research centre in the state to serve as research training and services centre for HIV, Lassa fever and emerging viruses.

The information is contained in a statement issued by Mr Dennis Mordi, the Communication Manager, Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN), on Thursday in Abuja.

The statement noted that Al-Makura announced the approval when Dr Patrick Dakum, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IHVN paid him a courtesy visit.

Mordi added that the visit was to update the governor on control measures put in place by the Institute to halt and reduce HIV burden in the state.

He said Al-Makura had expressed satisfaction with the collaboration between the state and the Institute.

Established in 2004 as a local organisation to address HIV and AIDS crisis in Nigeria, IHVN’s responsibilities include the development of infrastructure for treatment, care, prevention and support for people living with and those affected with HIV/AIDS.

It had, however, expanded to take care of other infectious diseases such as TB, malaria and cancer.
