FRI, MARCH 13 2020-theG&BJournal- The Akanu Ibiam International airport which was closed down in August 2019 for rehabilitation work will be reopened for use before Easter 2020, the Federal Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika said Friday, following his inspection of the extent of rehabilitation work done.
‘’The Nigerian government recognises the importance of the airport to the whole South East region, and the hardship occasioned by the closure, but insisted that it was done in the interest of safety and comfort of air travellers from the region,’’ the Minister said.
The Minister also promised that the work on the airport’s new terminal building would soon resume in earnest, given the budgetary provision for it in the 2020 budget.
He disclosed that the Buhari administration met the terminal project at about 20% but had taken it to about 60% completion stage.
On the reported shortage of some materials needed by the contractor, the Minister assured that the problem is being addressed, and would therefore not be an impediment to the completion of the project.
