SUN, JAN 14 2024-theGBJournal| Equatorial Guinea held mighty Super Eagles of Nigeria to 1-1 draw on Sunday inside the Alassane Quattara Stadium, Abidjan, a game many thought would be a stroll in the park for the Eagles.
The game turned out to be one of the most tormenting experience for the over 4,000 Nigerian fans inside the Stadium.
Ivan Salvador strike in the closing stages of the first half put Equatorial Guinea ahead briefly before Napoli and Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen scored the equalizer with a header to see out the half.
Many of the fans are already calling for a change in mentality and approach of the Eagles to the remaining group stage matches or they risk a first round exit.
Nigeria needs to show hunger to win games, and to win this Cup, we need hungry players,” Tony Okafor a Nigerian supporter told our contributor in Abidjan.
The key question for the Head Coach, Jose Peseiro now is whether to stick with the lackadaisical approach to matches, as seen in the friendly against Guinea when they lost 2-0 or put emphasis on what to EXPECT from the top professionals in the team.
Nigeria plays in Group A alongside host Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire who already has secured three points after beating Guinea Bissau 2-0 in the opening game on Saturday.
Nigeria’s next game is against the hungrier Elephants, and many of fans doubt if Nigeria stand a chance against the more cohesive Elephants.
