AFCON 2023| Nigeria sets up a quarter final cracker with Angola after a 2-0 thrashing of Cameroon

SAT, JAN 27 2024-theGBJournal|Nigeria’s Super Eagles will play Angola in the Quarter finals of the TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations after beating the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 2-0 on Saturday in the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.

Nigeria qualified into the knock-out stage second behind Equatorial Guinea in Group A while Cameroon scraped through in Group C after a stoppage-time winner against The Gambia in their final Group Stage game.

Nigeria’s forward Ademola Lookman scored a brace in the game to set up the meeting with Angola.

Angola’s Starman Gelson Dala also scored a braced in the first half of the match of the first quarter finals game with surprise entrant to the knock-out stage, Namibia.

Angola banged one more in through Mabululu, in the second half to register a resounding 3-0 victory over Namibia, the first time Angola has scored three goals against a team in the Africa Cup of Nation, and their third consecutive victory.

Nearly 30, 000 fans watched the scintillating Angolans play thrilling counter attacking football, with panache too.

For Namibia, its been a great campaign, reaching the knockout stage for the time in their history.

Meanwhile, in a cracking atmosphere, Nigeria laid down the marker against the Indomitable Lions in the eleventh minute of the second game with a goal by Semi Ajayi rule off-side following a VAR check.

Aggression defined the Nigerian play as forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman harassed the the Cameroon defense.

Victor Osimhen’s assist in the 35th minute, after stealing the ball from Cameroonian defender Oumar Gonzalez, saw forward Ademola Lookman smash the ball low, beating the Cameroonian stopper, Fabrice Ondoa to give the Nigeria the lead.

Goalkeeper Uzoho replaced Nwabali in the 65th minute after he was bundled downed badly by forward Georges-Kevin N’Koudou as he jumped to push a fast paced cross from the left.

Cameroon also brings in their veteran strike Aboubakar as play resumed.

In the 90th minute, Nigeria struck a sublime goal through Lookman, again, to send the Super Eagles flying into the quarter finals.
