THUR, JAN 18 2024-theGBJournal|Troost Ekong’s fine penalty kick help Nigeria beat host, Cote d’ Ivoire 1-0 in their TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations second group stage match, easing pressure on the Super Eagles and Head Coach Jose Peseiro.
Ekong scored the only goal of the match after the 59th minute at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan, calmly slotting into the top centre of the net after Victor Osimhen was fouled in the box by defender Ousmane Diomande.
It was the one very crucial moment for the Super Eagles in the tightly fought, cagy game as the Eagles held on for their first win in the tournament.
Cote d’ Ivoire’s Elephants opened the chase for glory in the campaign by beating Guinea-Bissau last Saturday while the Eagles were held 1-1 by giant killers Equatorial Guinea.
Nigeria now seat second on the table with 4 points behind Equatorial Guinea who beat Guinea-Bissau earlier today 4-2, on goal difference. Host Cote d’Ivoire is behind on three points.
