SAT, JUNE 22 2019-theG&BJournal- ‘’It was good for us to win the first game. It was a tough and difficult game and the next game is also going to be tough but we need to try and win the next game,’’ says Mikel Obi, Super Eagles captain.

His post-match take on a game that left millions of Nigerians home and abroad on edge for 94 minutes.

The two countries locked horns in their opening Group B encounter at the Alexandra Stadium Egypt, the first time the two countries meet in major tournament.

Pulsating, entertaining and end to end, Burundi held off, called the bluff of the multi-million dollar star studded Nigerian Super Eagles team until the 71st minute strike by China based Odion Ighalo broke the deadlock.

Burundi played waves of attacks from the first second of the game but couldn’t find an opener and intensified their onslaught after Nigeria took the lead in the second half after a back healed pass from Aina sent Ighalo free from the left and amidst the intense Burundi pressure. Ighalo’s goal was sublime but the back heel pass was even more sublime.

The goal and win signalled Nigeria’s intension to cash in on the $4.5 million winners price by July 19 2019.
