FRI FEB 27 2026-theGBJournal| In another dramatic political twist, Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), sending fresh shockwaves through Nigeria’s opposition ranks.
The Governor’s defection comes a day after the Speaker of Adamawa State House of Assembly resigned his membership of the PDP alongside 14 other Assembly members.
The Governor said his entire cabinet, and elected local government chairman are defecting with him, and his decision was taken in the interest of the people.
The move marks one of the most significant crossovers in recent months and further consolidates the ruling party’s expanding footprint across key states.
Fintiri’s defection underscores a growing wave of political realignments that have come to define Nigeria’s landscape since Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office.
Governors, federal lawmakers and influential party chieftains have steadily gravitated toward the APC, citing strategic alignment, access to federal leverage, and the shifting balance of power at the centre.
The latest switch not only alters the power configuration in Adamawa but also deepens concerns about the shrinking space for opposition politics ahead of future electoral cycles.
As the APC tightens its grip nationally, analysts say the pattern of defections reflects both pragmatic survival politics and a broader recalibration of loyalties in a Tinubu-led era.
