FRI JUNE 07 2024-theGBJournal| Midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scored early in the second half to earn Nigeria a 1-1 draw against South Africa as the Super Eagles continued their quest for a place for the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
South Africa Bafana Bafana came to dig in but played a free flowing attacking football at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
The Super Eagles struggled all through the first half to carve out a chance, struggling for an injection of pace.
The South Africans sent Nigeria 1-0 down in the 29th minute of the first half.
But Super Eagles midfielder Dele-Bashiru leveled the game up in the opening minutes of the second half, his first international goal for Nigeria, and a critical one too for Finidi George.
The South Africans saw out the draw despite the second half rally by the Super Eagles, and George Finidi’s men are now on the verge of being sent out in the continent’s qualifying rounds.
The draw is the Super Eagles third 1-1 draw in the qualifiers, leaving Finidi’s men fifth in the Group with just three points.
Earlier on Thursday, Benin Republic beat Rwanda 1-0, to move into second place behind Rwanda in Group C on goal difference.
