WED MARCH 05 2025-theGBJournal| First Bank of Nigeria Wednesday performed the ground breaking ceremony for its new 40-storey Head Quarters in Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island, Lagos, described as a symbol of innovation, excellence, and commitment to Nigeria’s growth.
The groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of the new 40-storey headquarters for the generational bank, set to become the tallest building in Nigeria. It is also viewed as a project that has jump-started Lagos as one of the World’s financial hubs.
Designed as a green-certified building, it will, as expected, reduce operational costs in line with the Bank’s avowed commitment to innovation, excellence, and environmental responsibility.
Notable Nigerian entrepreneurs at the ground breaking ceremony described the building project as ”audacious, bold and iconic”, which will further redefine First Bank and banking in Nigeria.
The heavyweight dignitaries include Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Chairman of First Bank Femi Otedola, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Dapo Abiodun, Ogun State Governor, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Tunde Falawiyo, Chairman of Folawiyo Group, the Chagoury Family who built the Eko Atlantic City, Mrs Daisy Danjuma, Bukola Saraki, former Senate President, and the billionaire who built one of the largest refineries in the world, Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group.
Vice President Kashim Shettima spoke passionately about the First Bank Iconic tower which he says ”is a symbol of our nation’s progress and ambition.”
”This tower will stand as a testament to our economic strength and vitality,” the Vice President adds.
Vice President Shettima noted that the tower will be the tallest building in West Africa and adds that ”the 40 story monument upon completion is a bold confident in our country’s future.”
According to him, ”for 130 years, First Bank has been a pillar of Nigeria’s economy, empowering businesses, supporting families and driving financial innovations. This tower will symbolize ambition and excellence in Eko Atlantic City. It will attract investment, consolidates Lagos position as a leading financial hub and show-case the dynamism of Nigeria’s private sector.”
On the Eko Atlantic on which the tower will be built, the Vice President said, it symbolizes the catch phrase of the day, which is the ”Audacity of Hope,” while commending the vision of the builders of the city, the Chagoury family.
Earlier, the Lagos State governor, elated, described the ground breaking ceremony as ”The Ground Breaking Ceremony” having been to the Eko Atlantic City to perform several ground breaking ceremonies and seen several investments come into the Eko Atlantic City.
”This is the investment that will change the future of the city. It is a building of the future. It is a realization of the dreams of dreamers and doers, of people that believe that indeed, this country can be a great nation,” Sanwo-Olu proclaimed.
Sanwo-Olu hailed the visionary leadership of President Bola Tinubu who set the tone for the construction of the city in 2004, during his tenure as the Governor of Lagos State.
He commended the audacity of Femi Otedola, the Chairman of First Bank HoldCo, as well as the Board and Management of First Bank ”that believe in his leadership and transformational capacity of Otedola and gave him and the managing director the go ahead to do this project.”
He said the project should be another clarion call to other big financial institutions.
”First Bank as usual, has lead the way. It is now time for all of you follow suit,” he said.
