FRI DEC 27 2024-theGBJournal| The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, António Guterres, has said he is concerned about the post-election violence in Mozambique, which has resulted in loss of lives, and the destruction of public and private property.
In a statement issued today by his spokesperson, the Secretary-General, said he takes note of the announcement of the Constitutional Council of Mozambique regarding the outcome of the general elections held on 9 October, and continues to follow developments closely.
He urged all political leaders and relevant national stakeholders to defuse tensions including through meaningful dialogue, legal redress, refrain from the use of violence and redouble efforts to seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis, in a constructive manner, which is essential to the collective future of Mozambicans.
The country was thrown into turmoil shortly after the Constitutional Council announced the final result of the October 9, 2024 election, validating Daniel Chapo of the ruling Frelimo Party as winner.
The opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane rejected the results in which the country’s court ruled he score 24.19% of the vote while Chapo secured 65.17% of the vote
Mondlane fled into exile from where he now leads the nationwide violent protest. He says that he will be inaugurated as the legitimate new president on January 15, 2025.
