TUE JUNE 25 2024-theGBJournal| The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Monday inaugurated a special unit to ensure optimal security in and around the Airports.
Their inauguration follows the Presidential approval granted the FAAN Aviation Security Department to bear arms in accordance with ICAO standards, and subsequent training of a selected number of staff of AVSEC Department.
The creation of the unit is part of the steps the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, earlier promised Nigerians he will take to curb the menace of touting and other illegal activities around our airports.
The Managing Director of FAAN, Bunmi Onabanjo-Kuku, on behalf of the Minister, unveiled the armed Aviation Security (AVSEC) unit at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The Minister assured the unit will be inaugurated at other international airports.
‘
‘They have the mandate to arrest and prosecute touts and other suspected criminals around our airports. This is apart from the other inter-ministerial effort that is still on-going to deal specifically with the issue of agencies of government within the airports that are involved in extortion, bribery and begging,” Keyamo said.
During the inauguration the FAAN boss noted that the airport environment is one that needs to be secured and hoped that there will not be need for the security unit to use their guns at any point.
