THUR MAY 23 2024-theGBJournal|Ademola Lookman and Atalanta made history on Wednesday, setting and breaking records that forever etched them into Italian folklore with their 3-0 defeat of Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa Championship final at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
The victory, marked a significant milestone in their history, as they had never reached a European final before this season.
”It is one of the best nights of my life,” Lookman, London-born Nigerian forward told TNT Sports.
On the cool windy night in Dublin, he became only the sixth player to score a hat-trick in a European final, the first in nearly 50 years of European cup final history. A win that secured Atalanta their first major European trophy in their 116-year history and their second trophy after the 1963 Coppa Italia.
His first two goals were the fastest two-goal lead a team have had in the European Cup final since 2001 when the League was called Uefa Cup. And the win gains Atalanta automatic entry into the group stage of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, providing further financial and competitive benefits for the club.
Atalant became the first Italian team to win the tournament since 1999 and Atalanta boss, 61-year old Gian Piero Gasperini said he is ”hugely proud of Italy because it was a cursed trophy.”
He adds, ”It gives hope for meritocracy. You can show faith in other teams without big bills and budgets.”
The Italian club not only earned prestige, they also secured a substantial financial reward.
For the 2023/24 season, it is estimated that Atalanta earned approximately €20 million from their Europa League campaign. This includes the prize for winning the final, performance bonuses, and additional revenue from broadcasting and market pool shares.
