…President Tinubu commended President George Weah for demonstrating uncommon leadership by conceding the election and averting any form of socio-political crisis.

SAT, NOV 18 2023-theGBJournal|Former President Goodluck Jonathan said after the Liberia Presidential Election run-off that he is deeply pleased with the successful outcome of the democratic process and look forward to a peaceful transition in January 2024.

The former President led the West African Elders Forum (TheWAEF ) Mediation Mission to both the October 10, 2023, general elections and the November 14, 2023, Presidential run-off poll in Liberia.

He congratulate the President-Elect Joseph Boakai and urge him to be magnanimous in victory and seek to continue the efforts to unite and advance his country.

”I am also particularly grateful to the outgoing President His Excellency George Weah, who has just conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent even ahead of the official declaration of the final result by the National Election Commission of Liberia. By doing this, President Weah has exhibited an exemplary display of statesmanship and commitment to the peace and progress of his country.

I am delighted that at the end of the exercise, Liberia wins, democracy gains and our sub-region, ECOWAS, is better for it,” Jonathan said.

The President-elect Boakai has received congratulatory messages from global leaders including President Bola Tinubu.

President Tinubu commended President George Weah for demonstrating uncommon leadership by conceding the election and averting any form of socio-political crisis.

The President says President Weah’s great act of democratic sportsmanship is exemplary, particularly at this time in West Africa, when democracy is under attack by malign actors who are bent on subverting the will of the people.

“I commend President George Weah for his sterling example, undiluted patriotism, and statesmanship. He has defied the stereotype that peaceful transitions of power are untenable in West Africa.

He has demonstrated that the outcome of elections in the sub-region need not become the propellant of violence and unrest and that the will of the people must always be respected,” the President said.

Meanwhile, President George Weah in concession speech extended ”heartfelt congratulations” to President-elect Boakai, his supporters, and his campaign team.

”I spoke with President-elect Joseph N. Boakai to congratulate him on his victory and to offer my sincere commitment to working with him for the betterment of our beloved Liberia, Weah said.

He noted that the closeness of the results reveals a deep division within our country.

”As we transition to the new Boakai administration, we must be vigilant to the dangers of division and work together to find common ground. Now, more than ever, unity is paramount for the love of Mama Liberia.”
