MON, SEPT 11 2023-theGBJournal |Chief Akintola Williams, the first Nigerian qualified chartered accountant has died, aged 104.
Broadly regarded as the doyen of the accountancy profession in Africa. His firm, Akintola Williams & Co was the first indigenous accounting firm in Africa.
He held several public sector positions including include Chairman of the Federal Income Tax Appeal Commissioners between 1958–68 as well as and Chairman of the Public Service Review Panel to correct the anomalies in the Udoji Salary Review Commission (1975) among numerous others.
He was a founding member of the Nigeria’s foremost accounting watchdog, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and was one of the arrow heads involved in the establishment of the then Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), now Nigerian Exchange Group.
The doyen celebrated his 104th birthday as recent as August 9.
