DAMATURU, AUGUST 10, 2016 – A large scale farmer in Yobe, Alhaji Bukar Buni, has said that improvement in the security situation has led to a boost in farming activities in the state.Buni is a former General Manager of Yobe State Television, Damaturu and took to farming after retirement.

He said in Damaturu on Wednesday that his business had started picking up after losses incurred during the period of insurgency.

The farmer said that he incurred more than 50 per cent losses during the pick period of insurgency.

Buni said that apart from the decline in farming activities during the period, there was no market for the little that was produced.

He expressed happiness that the situation had now improved.

According to him, the output of his farm has increased to about 70 per cent of what is obtained before the period of insurgency.

Buni said he was optimistic that production in his and other large and medium scale farms would increase drastically in the next few years.

He said that with support from relevant authorities and dedication on the part of farmers, the country could attain the status of sufficiency in food production and even export same.

He said inadequate processing and preservation facilities were responsible for the waste of perishable food items being recorded by farmers.

“We hardly consume up to 30 per cent of what we produce; the rest is wasted due to lack of proper processing and preservation,” he said.
