Presidential Election Tribunal begins proceedings in Abuja

MON, MAY. 08 2023-theGBJournal|The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party Nigeria, Peter Obi arrived the Court of Appeal, venue of the Presidential Election Petition hearing in Abuja shortly before the five-man panel began the proceedings on cases brought by some aggrieved politcal parties on the outcome of the February 25, 2023 Presidential Election.

The cases were instituted by the LP, PDP and some other parties, shortly after general election. The political parties are contesting the outcome which saw the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declare Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate President-Elect.

The INEC declared Tinubu winner after INEC announced he scored a total 8, 794, 726 votes. Atiku Abubakar of the PDP scored a total of 6, 984, 520 votes to place second while Peter Obi of the Labour Party scored a total of 6, 101, 533 votes to come in in third place.

The Tribunal Justices which includes a highly respected female justice are expected to hear the petitions filed by Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar today, both of whom are challenging the declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the election.

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and a faction of the Action Alliance (AA) are also challenging the declaration by INEC.

Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP has applied for an order to allow the live coverage of the proceedings, contending that the case is of national interest that involves the electorate in all states of the federation.

Atiku’s legal team filed the order directing the court’s registry and the parties on ”modalities for admission of Media Practioners and their Equipment into the courtroom.
