NGX All-Share Index ends the first week of trading in red, down 0.06% w/w

FRI. 06 JANUARY, 2023-theGBJournal| Closing the week, the Lagos bourse recovered losses from the previous session, bringing the All-Share Index up by 0.70% to close at 51,222.34 points.

The market’s performance was bolstered by renewed investor interest in AIRTELAFRI (+3.33%) and DANGCEM (+0.38%) offsetting losses in NESTLE (-1.82%) and ZENITHBANK (-0.41%).

Despite having gained in three of four trading sessions this week, the ASI recorded a 0.06% decline w/w, eroding the prior week’s gains.

Over the course of the week, AIRTELAFRI (-5.20% w/w), BUACEMENT (-1.79% w/w), NESTLE (-1.82% w/w) were the major drivers of the week’s loss.

As a result, the year-to-date (YTD) return stood at -0.06%, while the market capitalization shed N15.64bn w/w to close at N27.90trn.

Analysis of today’s market activities showed trade turnover settled higher relative to the previous session, with the value of transactions up by 307.38%.

A total of 195.74m shares valued at N7.45bn were exchanged in 3,650 deals. FBNH (+1.36%) led the volume chart with 41.90m units traded while BUACEMENT (+0.00%) led the value chart in deals worth N2.90bn.

Market breadth closed negative at a 1.07-to-1 ratio with declining issues outnumbering advancing ones. PZ (-9.09%) led fifteen (15) others on the laggard’s log, while NEIMETH (+8.39%) topped fourteen (14) others on the gainer’s table.

A total turnover of 921.856 million shares worth N27.154 billion in 15,601 deals was traded this week by investors on the floor of the Exchange, in contrast to a total of 1.880 billion shares valued at N18.988 billion that exchanged hands last week in 12,036 deals, according to NGX Exchange data.

The Financial Services Industry (measured by volume) led the activity chart with 616.527 million shares valued at N6.452 billion traded in 7,208 deals; thus contributing 66.88% and 23.76% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

The Industrial Goods Industry followed with 138.314 million shares worth N13.356 billion in 1,063 deals. The third place was the Conglomerates Industry, with a turnover of 55.931 million shares worth N92.845 million in 502 deals.

Trading in the top three equities namely FBN Holdings Plc, BUA Cement Plc and Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (measured by volume) accounted for 450.338 million shares worth N17.203 billion in 1,862 deals, contributing 48.85% and 63.35% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.
