SAT, 10 SEPT, 2022-theGBJournal| The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at a stakeholders Conference on Election Results Management in the 2023 Elections Friday in Abuja, touched on three broad areas which he says has significantly impacted on result management and elections in the country.

The Prof. Mahmood also at the event, launched the Yiaga Africa Election Results Analysis Dashboard (#ERAD) Report on Electronic Transmission of Election Results in the 2022 Ekiti and Osun Governorship Election (ERAD) organized by Yiaga Africa.

The Commission’s boss pointed to the administrative action taken by the Commission, the law and thirdly the role of Technology-appropriate technology, incrementally introduced, which he says are safe and secure, as the major issues which has significantly impacted on result management.

He said over the years the INEC has realized that efficient and transparent results management is at the heart of public trust, peaceful elections and the growth and consolidation of the country’s democracy.

According to Prof. Mahmood, the Commission has been resolute about this and invested enormous time, thinking and resources to improving the result management system.

‘’Working with other agencies and organizations, the Commission has tried to use legal enactments to improve the handling of results. They invested in technology, introduced several transparency enhancement procedures.

‘’It is therefore germane to say that tenacity, technology and transparency, the three Ts, have been on the thoughts of the INEC’s steady improvement of results management,’’ Mahmood said.

Speaking further on the 2023 general election, Prof Mahmood said that he is confident that the days of wanton manipulation of election results are over, acknowledging that the Commission needs to stay several steps ahead of those seeking to undermine the system.

‘’We will make sure that the votes cast by Nigerians are protected and the only determinant of who becomes what in our democracy.’’

Meanwhile, the INEC Boss disclosed that the Commission will be deploying over 700,000 adhoc staff for the 2023 general election, which he says are more than the Police and armed forces.

‘’This will give a sense of the size of what we are dealing with when it comes to election management in the country.’’
