William Ruto declared winner of Kenya’s 2022 presidential election

MON, 15 AUG, 2022-theGBJournal| Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati today declared William Ruto President-elect of the East African country, days after the last vote was cast in the election that has been widely hailed as free and fair.

Ruto garnered 7,176,141 or 50.49% of votes to beat closest rival, veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga who scored 6, 942,930 votes. In all 14 of the 20 million registered voters in Kenya voted.

Ruto becomes the country’s fifth president.

‘I want to thank God that we are here this evening to witness this momentous occasion as the people of Kenya restate what is Article 1 of the Constitution of Kenya; that all sovereign power belongs to the people of Kenya’’ Ruto said in his acceptance speech, promising ‘’to build on the foundation that Uhuru (Kenyatta, current President) and I put together.’’

Ruto was the country’s deputy president but has now managed to win the hotly contested election to claim the top job.

Ruto contested the Presidency as flag bearer for Kenya Kwanza Alliance, a coalition of political parties to which his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is part of.
