THUR 13 JAN, 2022-theGBJournal- This was disclosed in a press statement on Wednesday signed by the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency and Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement, Kashifu Abdullahi.

The statement reads in part: “The Federal Government of Nigeria directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12 am tonight, January 13, 2022.

“The approval was given following a memo written to the President by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Pantami.”

Recall that suspension comes as a retaliatory measure following Twitter’s removal of a post by President Muhammad Buhari in mid June 2021 for ‘’violating its rules.’’

The President’s tweet is in reference to 1967-90 civil war, in which he promised to punish groups threatening the security of the country

Lai Mohammed called the removal of the tweet ‘’unfair and double standard’’ saying that Twitter’s rule is not the universal rule

President Muhammadu Buhari had in June 2021 approved the composition of the Federal Government’s Team to engage with Twitter over the suspension of its operations in Nigeria.

The approval was announced in a statement in Abuja by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who will chair the team.

The Federal Government’s team also comprises the Attorney General of the Federation and Honourable Minister of Justice, Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Minister of Works and Housing, Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment as well as other relevant government agencies.
