FRI, 30 OCT, 2020-theGBJournal-MOJEC, a specialist metering company in Nigeria and Momas  Electricity Meters Manufacturing Company Limited will both be leading a broad roll out of electricity meters within the Lagos, Kano and Kaduna franchise area today, sources told theGBJournal in Abuja Thursday
‘’We have been given the green light and we will be starting with these three key areas given the demand volume and their commercial nature and I think the inauguration of the project will be done tomorrow (today),’’ a source in one of the electricity meter said.
He said the distribution will be in phases and the first phase will involve the distribution of close to 1 million meters (precisely 900,000) within these three areas.
Consumers our reporters spoke to on the development are however sceptical about the near term impact on availability of electricity (light) but welcome the idea that the days of crazy billing may be coming to an end in the country.
Our correspondent reports that consumers in some States with devastating and perennial blackout including Edo, Delta Ekiti etc are surprised and angry that the Federal Government has not included them in this meter roll out plan, and many are wary of the project’s impact on regular electricity supply.
It is not certain when the franchises in these States will begin to implement prepaid meter but the Federal Government under the Presidential Metering initiative has committed to the bulk procurement and distribution of about 6.5 million meters to be distributed to the 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in the country.
