COVID-19 Nigeria: Confirmed cases in Lagos State tops nearly all African countries except six

WED, JULY 08 2020-theG&BJournal– The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Lagos State has assumed a desperate dimension. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced 153 new cases in the State bringing its total to 11,520.
Lagos State total now means it is the 7th most infected State in Africa behind South Africa (confirmed cases 205,721), Algeria (16,404), Egypt (76,222), Morocco (14,565), Ghana (21,0770) and Cameroon (14,524).
The State’s active cases now total 9,696 with 1,691 recoveries and 133 fatalities.
No explanation is yet offered as to why infection in Lagos State is surging at this rate despite it being the first to roll-out at full blast COVID-19 prevention and control measures.
The NCDC reported 503 new cases from 20 states in the country Tuesday to bring the total confirmed cases in Nigeria to 29,789. 152,952 samples have been tested in total while a total of 17,012 active cases are being followed. 12,108 people have recovered as reported but fatalities have equally increased to 669 nationwide with Lagos bearing 133 of the fatalities.
Besides Lagos State, Ondo (76) Edo (54), FCT (41), Enugu (37) and Rivers (30) States increased their infection profile. The other States reporting new cases are Benue (24), Osun (20), Kaduna (15), Kwara (13), Abia (9), Borno (8), Plateau (6),Taraba (5), Ogun (3), Kano (3), Kebbi (2), Nasarawa (2), Bayelsa(1) and Gombe (1).
Meanwhile, the Africa CDC data shows that 54 African Union Member States reporting COVID-19 cases reported a total 494,380 confirmed cases as of July 7 2020.  11,652 deaths have also been recorded, and recoveries now at 238,287.
