‘’We are worried about the effects of COVID-19’’ Health Minister Dr Ehanire tells Kazadi Mulombo, new WHO representative to Nigeria

The new WHO Representative to Nigeria, Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo has been in Nigeria since 18th June, 2020 for his 2nd coming to work
ABUJA, Nigeria, TUE, JULY 07 2020-theG&BJournal-The Minister of Health Dr Osagie Ehanire told the new World Health Organisation Representative to Nigeria (WHO), Dr Walter Kazadi Mulombo that the country is worried about the impact and effect of COVID-19.
He expressed the concern while officially welcoming the WHO representative who arrived the country since 18th June, 2020 for his 2nd coming to work but went into 14 days self-isolation as required by Nigeria’s health guideline for incoming visitors having been deployed from Accra, Ghana.
Nigeria’s total of confirmed cases is now 29,286 and rising, with more states across the country witnessing pockets of surge across their local government areas. 654 deaths have been reported as well with total reported recoveries now 11,828.
While welcoming Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, the new WHO Representative to Nigeria, Dr. Ehanire told him that Nigeria will count on his experience to continue to standardize its COVID-19 response.
Dr Ehanire also expressed the appreciation of Nigeria to the UN Bodies who have come together to create the “One Basket Fund” which has significantly boosted the resources and the assets which Nigeria has to respond to the pandemic. The first of which was the US$2 million consignment that came into Nigeria.
Dr. Ehanire also disclosed that Nigeria has a good stock of medical supplies in the warehouse along with what was received from the EU, US Government, UK and the Global Fund.
The new WHO Rep in Nigeria said that he was impressed by the set up at the Airport when he was coming in, as well as the protocol put in place at the hotel he stayed in. He said that Nigeria’s administrators who are handling COVID-19 protocols gave him the impression that they surely know what they are doing.
Dr. Mulombo congratulated the Honourable Minister of Health, for taking the leadership to make Nigeria certified polio-free. “It is a very big achievement and it paves the way for the whole continent to be certified polio-free; in that we are very proud of Nigeria.”
