WED, APRIL 08 2020-theG&BJournal- Leading consultant and dental surgeon, Dr. Slyvan.O Ebigwei (MON) has advised the Federal Government (FG) to implement a nationwide lockdown for at least 100 days given the changing profile of the coronavirus (COVID-19) transmission and growing number of confirmed cases in the country.
President Muhammadu Buhari announced movement restrictions on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lagos and Ogun States March 29 2020, for 14 days with effect from 11pm on Monday 30 March 2020. The restriction is due to expire this weekend.
The latest NCDC data shows 16 new cases confirmed as at 9.30pm on the 7th of April taking the nationwide total to 254, 6 fatalities and 44 discharged patients.
‘’We do not have the capacity to handle an explosion of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. So I would advocate a complete lock down. Wuhan in China was locked down for a total of 76 days. So it is better we endure to save our lives but the government should be more strategic while providing palliatives to the people through the local governments,’’ Dr Ebigwei told theG&BJournal.

He strongly advised Nigerians to stay home and follow all the instructions put in place by the governments across the country and health agencies to contain the spread of the deadly disease.
‘’That is the only option. It is either you stay home and live or you go out and die. People should exercise patient, prepare for further lockdown. The number of people infected is increasing, it is not abating, so people should be concerned,’’ he said.
He also called on wealthy Nigerians to look towards the grassroots as they pile on their COVID-19 donations into the Federal Government coffers.
‘’This is the time for the members of the National Assembly and various states legislators also to underscore their relevance to their constituencies. They should all go back home and be in the frontline of the fight for their people. It is not godly to hang on to your wealth while your people die of a strange disease.’’ Ebigwei said.
