FRI, AUGUST 24 2018-theG&BJournal-The Republics of Benin and Niger have cleared their $10.1m electricity debt to avert disconnection. This comes after Nigeria threatened to disconnect both countries from the grid.
The affected countries made the payment through their respective power firms, with NIGELEC of the Republic of Niger paying $3.79m, while the Community Electric du Benin of the Republic of Benin remitted $6.32m to Nigeria’s electricity market.
Both countries are long time electricity customers. Togo is another country within the ECOWAS region that Nigeria supplies with electricity.
Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, earlier in July raised concerns about the indebtedness of international customers while revealing that President Muhammadu Buhari’s government was working hard to ensure that the electricity debts by the country’s neighbours were cleared.
