TUE OCT 13 2026-theGBJournal| Nigeria is shifting its economic focus from macroeconomic stabilisation to investment, financial market development and sustainable growth, as senior officials held talks with the International Monetary Fund and World Bank leadership on the sidelines of the 2026 annual meetings.
Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Olayemi Cardoso and Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele met separately with IMF First Deputy Managing Director Dan Katz and World Bank President Ajay Banga on Monday to discuss Nigeria’s economic outlook, financing needs and priorities for the next phase of reforms.
The engagements underscore the government’s push to translate improved macroeconomic stability into stronger investor confidence, greater capital mobilisation and a more resilient financial system capable of supporting long-term growth.
Talks with the IMF focused on Nigeria’s macroeconomic outlook, policy priorities and opportunities for continued technical cooperation, while discussions with the World Bank centred on development financing, private sector participation, infrastructure, digital transformation and financial inclusion.
The emphasis, for the CBN, is increasingly on leveraging economic stability to deepen financial markets, improve the efficiency of the financial system and strengthen Nigeria’s financial links with global markets.
The meetings also highlighted closer coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities, with both institutions pursuing their respective mandates to support a more predictable economic environment and improve the conditions for investment.
CBN Deputy Governor for Economic Policy Philip Ikeazor participated in the engagements alongside senior officials from the Federal Ministry of Finance and the central bank.
