FIDELITYBK, MTNN lead losers chart as NGX benchmark index falls 0.28%; Naira firms vs dollar amid stronger reserves

THUR OCT 01 2026-theGBJournal| The Nigerian equities market closed Wednesday’s session on a negative note, as the NGX All-Share Index (ASI) declined by 0.28% to close at 251,211.67 points, while market capitalisation also fell by 0.26% to settle at N163.10 trillion.

Consequently, the Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns settled at +2.9% and +61.4%, respectively.

The negative performance was driven by losses in MTNN (-3.01%), HBMNG (-1.5%), ACCESSCORP (-2.25%), FIDELITYBK (-6.1%),and GTCO (-0.38%), which outweighed gains in BUACEMENT (+3.20%), OANDO (+1.45%) and WEMABANK (+1.61%).

Market activity strengthened, as total volume traded advanced by 88.71% to 1.04 billion units, while value traded rose by 56.39% to N53.63 billion.

VFDGROUP (+8.21%) recorded the highest trading volume at 367.32mn units, while UACN (+0.00%) accounted for the highest transaction value at N21.51 billion.

Market breadth was negative at 0.83x, indicating a higher number of losers relative to gainers, as thirty stocks declined against twenty-five advancers.

LEARNAFRICA (-10.00%) emerged as the session’s top loser, while HMCALL (+10.00%) led the gainers’ chart.

The NASD OTC market closed on a negative note also, as the NASD Security Index (NSI) declined by 1.62% to 4,407.44 points.

Market capitalisation also decreased by 1.49% to N2.65 trillion, while the market’s year-to-date (YTD) return improved to 24.37% from 15.43% in the previous session.

NASD emerged as the top advancer, gaining 9.98%, while AFRILAND was the top decliner, shedding 8.90%.

At the currency market, the naira appreciated against the U.S. dollar, with the USD/NGN pair declining by 0.14% to close at N1,329.16/$.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s external reserves increased by 0.03% to $54.92 billion as of 29 September 2026, extending the recent improvement in the country’s reserve position.
