Nigerian stocks retreats as profit taking hit banks, Naira strengthens as external reserves climbs to $53.90 billion

THUR SEPT 03 2026-theGBJournal| Nigerian equities market closed on a bearish note Wednesday, as profit-taking in the banking sector weighed on overall market performance.

The All-Share Index (ASI) fell by 0.03%o close at 246,019.17 points , bringing its year-to-date (YTD) return down to 58.10%, while market capitalisation fell 0.03% to N158.91 trillion.

Losses in ACCESSCORP (-5.2%), NASCON (-10.0%), UBA (-2.8%), and STANBIC (-2.0%) dragged the All-Share Index lower.

The total volume traded declined by 34.5% to 426.84 million units, valued at N28.44 billion, and exchanged in 41,475 deals.

ACCESSCORP was the most traded stock by volume at 33.22 million units, while ARADEL was the most traded stock by value at NGN4.14 billion.

Sectoral performance was mixed, as the Banking (-0.6%), and Consumer Goods (-0.2%) indices declined, while the Insurance (+2.7%), Oil & Gas (+0.3%) and Industrial Goods (+0.2%) indices advanced.

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was positive (1.1x), as 33 tickers gained relative to 29 losers.

NASCON (-10.0%) and BETAGLAS (-10.0%) led the laggards, while TRIPPLEG (+10.0%) and SOVRENINS (+9.7%) posted the most significant gains of the day.

In contrast, the NASD OTC market closed today’s session on a positive note, as the NASD Security Index (NSI) advanced by 0.85% to 4,433.17 points.

Market capitalisation also rose by 0.85% to N2.66 trillion, while the market’s year-to-date (YTD) return improved to 25.10%, from 24.05% in the previous session.

Trading activity strengthened, with traded volume increasing by 121.11% to 1.16mn units, while transaction value rose by 86.44% to N103.73mn. A total of 39 trades were executed, representing a 69.57% increase from the previous session.

On the performance chart, SDGEFLUID (+8.93%) led the gainers, while SDAFRILAND (-10.50%) emerged as the session’s sole decliner.

Meanwhile, the official FX rate appreciated further by 0.1% to N1,328.15/USD. Similarly, Nigeria’s external reserves increased by 0.17% to $53.90 billion as of 1 September 2026, reflecting the continued strengthening of the country’s reserve position, supported by sustained foreign-exchange inflows.
