TUES JULY 21 2026-theGBJournal| Rescue teams are searching for nine people after a passenger boat capsized in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State, killing at least five women, while 23 others have been rescued, Nigeria’s emergency management agency said on Monday.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said search and rescue operations were continuing at Malamawa Yandutse, where the accident occurred, with its Kano Operations Office coordinating the multi-agency response.
According to Situation Update No. 2, released at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, additional information from residents and families confirmed that eight more passengers escaped unassisted, bringing the total number of survivors to 23.
Preliminary findings showed the boat was carrying 37 passengers—28 females and nine males, including children. As of the latest update, 23 people had been rescued alive, while five females were confirmed dead.
Search operations are continuing for the remaining nine missing passengers, comprising eight females and one male.
The search effort involves the Jigawa State Fire Service, local divers, community volunteers and other stakeholders, with NEMA coordinating operations alongside the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) and other relevant agencies.
NEMA said it would continue the search and rescue operation until all those missing are accounted for, adding that further updates would be issued as more information becomes available.
