…Instead of debates over tactics, title contenders and star players, much of the pre-tournament conversation has focused on visas, ticket affordability, border controls and climate conditions.

…Mexico, the tournament’s co-host will play South Africa, as the much-awaited 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off in North America.

THUR JUNE 11 2026-theGBJournal| As the World Cup kicks off  today (Mexico vs South Africa) at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, football’s premier global spectacle is confronting a growing list of controversies that have shifted attention away from the action on the pitch and onto questions of access, affordability and security.

What organizers hoped would be a celebration of the world’s most popular sport has instead been overshadowed by complaints over soaring ticket prices, stringent immigration procedures, extreme heat concerns and a series of travel-related disputes affecting fans and officials.

The latest controversy emerged this week when a Somali referee appointed to the tournament was reportedly denied entry to the United States, prompting criticism from football stakeholders and fan groups.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino acknowledged the issue but insisted efforts were being made to resolve it.

“We are working through the relevant authorities to find solutions wherever challenges arise,” Infantino said. “Every person involved in the World Cup is important to us, and we remain committed to ensuring the tournament is as inclusive as possible.”

The incident has become a focal point in wider concerns about immigration restrictions surrounding the competition.

Iranian supporters have also reported difficulties securing travel authorization, leaving some unable to attend matches despite purchasing tickets and making travel arrangements months in advance.

Advocacy groups argue that heightened vetting procedures risk excluding fans from countries facing diplomatic or administrative hurdles.

Several current and former players have publicly criticized what they describe as an overly rigid entry process, warning that excessive scrutiny could undermine the tournament’s reputation as a global gathering open to all.

At the same time, supporters fortunate enough to secure travel documents have encountered another obstacle: cost.

Ticket prices, accommodation expenses and transportation costs have surged, leading to accusations that attending the World Cup has become prohibitively expensive for ordinary fans.

Addressing the criticism, Infantino defended FIFA’s pricing structure, arguing that revenues generated from major tournaments are reinvested into football development worldwide.

“We believe the pricing reflects the scale and demand of this event,” he said. “The revenues generated help fund football projects across the world, supporting the growth of the game at every level.”

The explanation has done little to ease frustration among supporters who say the tournament is increasingly becoming inaccessible to the fan base that helped build its global appeal.

Concerns over weather conditions have added another layer of uncertainty.

Meteorologists have warned that temperatures in several host cities could reach levels that test both players and spectators, despite mitigation measures such as cooling stations, hydration protocols and scheduling adjustments.

Player welfare advocates have urged organizers to remain flexible should conditions deteriorate during the tournament.

The accumulation of controversies has produced an unusual backdrop for an event traditionally defined by sporting narratives rather than logistical disputes.

Instead of debates over tactics, title contenders and star players, much of the pre-tournament conversation has focused on visas, ticket affordability, border controls and climate conditions.

Yet despite the turmoil, stadiums are expected to be packed and global television audiences are projected to reach billions.

Football’s enduring appeal may ultimately ensure the tournament succeeds on the field.

But as the opening matches begin, the World Cup faces a challenge beyond producing memorable moments: convincing supporters that the world’s biggest sporting event remains truly accessible to the world.

For now, the competition starts with an uncomfortable distinction — a World Cup whose first major story has been the chaos surrounding it.

Meanwhile, 80,000 fans are expected to pack the prestigious Estadio Azteca for the opener which promises to be an incredible spectacle.
