THUR APRIL 30 2026-theGBJournal| The Supreme Court on Thursday dealt a crushing legal and political blow to the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), nullifying the party’s disputed November 2025 national convention in Ibadan and voiding the factional leadership it produced.

In a split 3–2 ruling, the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by the Turaki camp for lacking merit, affirming earlier judgments that the convention was conducted in defiance of valid court orders and in breach of the PDP constitution.

With the verdict, the Supreme Court has now drawn a firm judicial line under one of the PDP’s most destabilising internal battles—leaving the opposition party with little choice but to confront the political wreckage and reorganise fast.

For the Turaki camp, the judgment extinguishes the legal basis for the faction’s claim to the PDP national secretariat, weakens its authority in internal party negotiations, and severely narrows its leverage in the battle for control of the opposition party.

Any claim by the faction to issue directives, convene meetings, or act as the party’s National Working Committee now stands on shaky legal ground.

With 2027 already shaping internal alignments, the ruling also diminishes the faction’s bargaining power in talks over candidate selection, convention planning and control of party structures nationwide.

The judgment further reinforces a hard lesson for the PDP: internal impunity and procedural shortcuts now carry existential costs.

Recall that the legal battle began when the Ibadan Convention, held under controversial circumstances, having been conducted amid subsisting court orders restraining the party from proceeding with the exercise.
