TUE MAR 31 2026-theGBJournal| Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from office, becoming the first cabinet member in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to step down in compliance with a recent presidential directive, and the provisions of the Electoral Act.
Tuggar submitted his resignation letter on Monday at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, signaling the formal end of his tenure.
”I express my sincere appreciation to President Tinubu for the trust and opportunity to serve under the Renewed Hope Agenda, and to contribute to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy through the 4D Doctrine,” Tuggar wrote in his resignation letter.
His departure marks the close of a notable chapter defined by efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy and expand its global footprint.
During his time in office, Tuggar championed stronger bilateral and multilateral partnerships, while pushing a more strategic and proactive diplomatic agenda aimed at elevating Nigeria’s influence on the global stage.
He also emphasized a people-centered approach to diplomacy, prioritizing the welfare of Nigerians abroad and fostering economic diplomacy to attract investment and drive growth.
Tuggar says he remains deeply grateful for the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the collaboration and partnership of colleagues and partners across the world.
As the administration moves forward with its directive, attention now turns to who will succeed him and how the evolving foreign policy direction will shape Nigeria’s international engagements.
