…In the worst-case scenario, prolonged leadership disputes could even complicate the party’s ability to present candidates

TUE MAR 10 2026-theGBJournal| The deepening internal crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is raising growing concerns that Africa’s once-dominant ruling party could face serious obstacles ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The divisions have been visible since the fallout from the 2023 presidential race, when disagreements over zoning and leadership arrangements fractured the party.

Key figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike symbolized the deepening rift, particularly after a group of influential governors openly resisted the party’s presidential ticket and demanded structural concessions.

That conflict exposed longstanding tensions within the PDP between northern and southern power blocs.

Beyond personalities, the party has also been consumed by disputes over the national chairmanship and control of party structures at state and national levels.

Legal battles, parallel congresses, and repeated suspensions of party officials have created a perception of instability that undermines the PDP’s credibility as a governing alternative.

For many observers, the party’s internal courtroom drama has at times overshadowed its policy positions or its critique of the government.

Prolonged leadership disputes, factional alignments, and unresolved structural disagreements are threatening the party’s cohesion at a time when political regrouping ahead of the next electoral cycle should ordinarily be underway.

The crisis has also triggered legal battles and parallel claims to authority within different organs of the party. Observers warn that if these disputes escalate into prolonged court cases or rival conventions, the party’s ability to meet key electoral deadlines and present a united front could be jeopardized.

Political analysts note that the stakes are particularly high as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually begin to take shape.

For a major opposition platform like the PDP, internal stability is crucial not only for candidate selection but also for coordinating nationwide campaign structures and mobilizing supporters across Nigeria.

The situation has sparked fears among party faithful that continued fragmentation could weaken the PDP’s standing in the country’s competitive political landscape. Rival parties could exploit the uncertainty to strengthen their own alliances and consolidate political influence ahead of the polls.

Unless decisive steps are taken to resolve leadership disagreements and rebuild trust among its factions, the PDP risks entering the 2027 electoral cycle in a weakened state.

In the worst-case scenario, prolonged leadership disputes could even complicate the party’s ability to present candidates, raising the specter of its absence from the ballot in what would be one of the most consequential elections in Nigeria’s democratic history.
