MON MAR 09 2026-theGBJournal| Several cities and industrial hubs across Nigeria are currently suffering severe electricity shortage as gas supply constraints continue to disrupt power generation, severely undermining the operations of electricity distribution companies (DisCos).

The worsening shortage of gas—Nigeria’s dominant fuel for thermal power plants—has forced every power generation companies to scale down output, leaving the grid unable to meet growing electricity demand.

Industry operators say the supply disruptions have significantly reduced generation capacity, triggering frequent system instability and prolonged outages across multiple distribution networks.

With less power available for dispatch, DisCos are increasingly struggling to meet their supply obligations to homes, businesses and industrial clusters already grappling with high operating costs.

The gas supply challenge has been linked to a mix of infrastructure bottlenecks, payment disputes within the power value chain, and declining upstream supply to domestic power plants.

Analysts note that the liquidity crisis in Nigeria’s electricity market continues to discourage gas producers from prioritising deliveries to power plants despite government policies aimed at boosting domestic gas utilisation.

As outages persist, concerns are mounting over the broader economic implications, particularly for manufacturing and small businesses that rely heavily on grid electricity.

Stakeholders warn that unless gas supply to power plants stabilises and sector debts are addressed, the power sector may face deeper operational disruptions, prolonging Nigeria’s long-standing electricity reliability crisis
