MON FEB 16 2026-theGBJournal| Capital inflows into Nigeria recorded a significant upswing in the third quarter of 2025, driven largely by a sharp increase in portfolio investments.
Fresh data, released over the weekend by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), show foreign investors ramped up holdings in equities and money market instruments, pushing portfolio investment to the top of the capital importation chart and signaling renewed confidence in the country’s financial markets.
The data puts total capital importation into Nigeria at US$6.014.77 billion, higher than US$1.252.66 million recorded in Q3 2024, indicating an increase of 380.16%. In comparison to the preceding quarter, capital importation increased by 17.46% from US$5,120.50 million in Q2 2025.
Portfolio Investment ranked top with US$4,853.96 million, accounting for 80.70%, followed by Other Investment with US$864.57 million, accounting for 14.37%. Foreign Direct Investment recorded the least with US$296.25 million (4.93%) of total capital importation in Q3 2025.
The Banking sector recorded the highest inflow with US$3,142.69 million, representing 52.25% of total capital imported in Q3 2025. This reflects growing trust in the stability and growth prospects of Nigeria’s financial sector and could support broader economic activity if the inflows are sustained.
The Financing sector inflow rose, valued at US$1,855.66 million (30.85%), and Production/ Manufacturing sector with US$261.35 million (4.35%).
According to the NBS, Capital Importation during the reference period originated largely from the United Kingdom with US$2.935.41 billion, representing 48.80% of the total capital imported. This was followed by the United States with US$950.47 million (15.80%) and the Republic of South Africa with US$773.95 million (12.87%).
