Benin Republic interior minister says attempted coup foiled

SUN DEC 07 2025-theGBJournal| Benin Republic army officer, Lt Col. Pascal Tigri was named president of the military committee after a group of officers appeared on television today, announcing the dissolution of government in an apparent coup, the latest of many in the ECOWAS sub-region.

The details of the coup attempt is still unfolding.

The U.S Embassy in Cotonou said it is monitoring reports of gunfire in Cotonou, the country’s capital, as well as ”unconfirmed reports of a coup by members of the military.”

The whereabout of President Patrice Talon is unknown yet. Talon has been in power since 6 April, 2026.

However, Reuters report quoting the tiny West African country’s interior minister, Alassane Seidou, says the apparent coup attempt has been foiled.

Latest report monitored by the Nigerian government, said also that the National Guard has taken control of the situation and surrounded the television station. and negotiation ongoing.

Thousand of civilians were seen on Cotonou streets after the coup against Talon was announced, with some holding bold signs that say ”The Voice of the People, the Army of Benin.”
