Slight dip in NGX All-Share Index, sectoral performance broadly negative

THUR AUG 28 2025-theGBJournal| Nigerian stocks fell on Thursday, as bearish sentiment intensified in the equities market.

The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) dropped 0.49% to close at 140,557.24 points. Market capitalisation also went down by N437.54 billion (0.49%), settling at N88.93 trillion.

In turn, the year-to-date (YTD) return moderated to 36.56% from 37.23% in the previous session.

The downturn in the market was largely underpinned by selling pressure in select bellwether stocks namely, GTCO (-3.11%), WAPCO (-2.99%), DANGSUGAR (-5.54%), and ZENITHBANK (-1.29%), which outweighed buying interest in TRANSCORP (+0.84%), NEM (+7.96%), NGXGROUP (+7.94%), and DANGCEM (+0.04%).

Sectoral performance was broadly negative, with only the Insurance Index (+0.44%) closing in the green.

The Banking Index (-1.41%) led the market sentiment, followed closely with Consumer Goods Index (-0.92%), Industrial Index (-0.45%), and the Oil & Gas (-0.02%).

Market activity improved compared to the previous session, with trade volume and value transaction rising 29.60% and 27.35%, respectively.

Market breadth closed negative at 0.46x, reflecting more decliners and advancers. SCOA (+10.00%) led the eighteen (18) gainers, while INTENEGINS (-9.62%) led the thirty-nine (39) losers.

Meanwhile, the NASD market sustained its positive close, with the NASD Securities Index (NSI) and market capitalisation inching higher by 0.40%, closing at 3,659.70 points and N2.19 trillion, respectively.

Market activity significantly declined, as transaction volume and trade value fell by 99.00% and 91.21%, respectively.

SDCSCSPLC (+6.00%) advanced as the leading gainer, whereas SDAFRILAND (-0.25%) led the market laggards.
